A recent report on Student Services identified some problems within Killeen ISD’s student counseling program.

A presentation to the school board last week by Will Hardaway from Gibson Consulting went over the results of the district’s Student Services Internal Audit.

Some of the key takeaways, which surprised and concerned board members, were the statistics on chronic absenteeism and problems with disciplinary programs.

“KISD’s Counseling Program is not reflective of key attributes and expectations defined in the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling,” Hardaway said.

The report found that KISD the program closely reflects a “low performing model” which Hardaway went on to explain.

“School counselors are not generally included on school leadership teams. Family feedback surveys are not meaningfully analyzed and acted upon, Counselors are not expected to maintain or monitor data and the counselor role varies widely from campus to campus and is largely defined by the campus principal.”
