Over 70pc of Irish businesses suffered cyber attack in the past 12 months – report

Around 71pc of the 200 Irish businesses surveyed experienced a cyber attack in the past 12 months, up 22pc from the same period last year.

Ireland also had the highest median average number of attacks across the eight countries which featured in the research. Irish companies recorded more cyber attacks than their counterparts in the UK, US, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

The most common point of entry for hackers was a corporate-owned server, with 57pc of Irish companies experiencing this kind of attack.

There was also a rise in the number of phishing emails. This occurs when a target is tricked into sharing sensitive data.

The most common outcome for businesses here was a financial loss. More than 40pc reported losing money following a payment diversion fraud.

While the number of attacks was high, the cost on businesses remained relatively low.

Half of the impacted companies said the cost of a cyber attack was below €10,000. This was an improvement on 2022 figures, where only 35pc said that their annual cyberattack bill was below €10,000.
