The Kentucky Auditor of Public Accounts office released a special examination of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System last Thursday, which showed issues with the system office, including overcharging local community and technical colleges by $24 million for expenses.
The examination was requested by the KCTCS’ board of regents following an internal audit conducted in March. The audit began on May 15 and focused on activity between July 1, 2020, and April 30, 2023.
Auditor Mike Harmon said he recused himself for much of the audit as he was running for governor at the time of the request.
Harmon said “major” organizations have to go through a financial statement audit every year.
“We have received requests for special examinations in the past,” he said. “The personnel and staff at KCTCS were very cooperative and had concerns about past leadership.”
