A Timaru man is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital after being injured by an explosion in a garage he was working in on Thursday evening.

Sergeant Sam Stewart said a man was working on a vehicle’s battery when the explosion occurred at the property in Totara Place about 5pm.

The man suffered severe burns and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital, Stewart said.

South Canterbury fire risk management officer Craig Chambers, who visited the site on Friday, confirmed the incident was accidental.

He also confirmed that maintenance being done to a vehicle in the garage was the cause of the fire.

Hato Hone St John had sent two ambulances, one rapid response vehicle and one helicopter to the property, a spokesperson said.

“One patient was assessed at the scene and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition.”

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson Jill Higgison said fire crews from Timaru and Washdyke attended.
