UNDSS Ethiopia enables humanitarian assessment following Peace Agreement

Three days ago, UNDSS Ethiopia supported a joint needs assessment mission for different UN entities and partner non-governmental organizations in parts of the Amhara and Tigray regions. The assessment followed the announcement of a permanent cessation of hostilities between The Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). 

The conflict in Northern Ethiopia has claimed many lives and destroyed livelihoods. There is hope that this suffering can be alleviated with the signing of the Agreement. Additionally, the UN and its partners will also have access to places that were previously inaccessible because of the protracted fighting to alleviate human suffering. 

According to Mr. Prince Bruce, the Chief Security Adviser in Ethiopia, “UNDSS Ethiopia has been supporting UN agencies to perform humanitarian operations within acceptable risk levels from the beginning of the crisis.” “The peace deal offers a better framework for expanded humanitarian assistance and an avenue to enhancing security coordination with the host government security apparatus.”
