Growing up with parents who were risk managers, Alicia Carter knew what she was getting into when she decided to pursue a career in the field.
Her father worked for aviation companies, and her mother was a bank risk manager. When Ms. Carter decided on a career in insurance after considering becoming a museum curator, her parents encouraged her to explore the business. Having worked for a State Farm agency while in college in Utah, she took a job at Marsh LLC in Charlotte, North Carolina, after graduating with a double major in history and business.
After four years as a broker, she took the opportunity to work with an experienced risk manager at bedding manufacturer Sealy, where she learned about a broad array of risk management issues, including covering its trucking fleet. This proved helpful when she moved to Old Dominion, which has 12,000 vehicles, in 2012. The freight company had not previously had a risk manager, so she was able to build the role from scratch.
Ms. Carter said the opportunity to solve problems and the variety of the work attracted her to risk management.
