Anne Arundel County police are investigating the finances at the Waugh Chapel Swim Club after an internal review raised questions about $66,000 in charges and missing cash.

Paul Walker, membership director and audit committee chairman of the club, said that after financial irregularities were found in pool accounts, the club terminated treasurer Ron Shapard in December. Swim and dive program director Kim Champagne resigned at the same time.

Club leadership has since learned no tax returns have been filed in several years, Walker said.

Anne Arundel County police said Tuesday that they received a complaint about the irregularities on March 19 and opened an investigation into possible embezzlement. A police spokesman declined to comment on its status.
