The Augusta Commission’s Stupor Bowl was scheduled to kick off at the old Regency Mall site again this year, but the mall’s owner tore out the concrete parking to keep from having to pay the city’s stormwater tax.
So, with playing there out of the question, the mayor and commissioners huddled and came up with another game. They chose one that’s taken the city by storm since it started showing up on Walmart shelves: Augusta Opoly. Not only would it be good publicity for the Garden City, but it would also allow the elected officials to demonstrate their real estate and business prowess and show taxpayers they don’t just spend money willy-nilly, although that’s exactly what they do. To showcase the event, they rented the Miller Theater and sold tickets for $30 and $50. The $30 tickets were supposed to allow you to stay and see a replay of Mayor Hardie Davis’ inauguration earlier this month, while the $50 tickets let you skip the inauguration replay and exit by a side door and go home when the game ended.
