Commentary: A “for” vote on Prop K makes good sense – Opinion – Austin American-Statesman

I am a 35-year resident of Austin, activist, former City Council candidate and someone that cares deeply about the future of Austin. I am extremely independent and have no allegiance to any political party. In my humble opinion a city of nearly one million with a $4.1 billion budget and residents leaving the city due to high property taxes should be making every effort to ensure city government reviews every opportunity to spend tax dollars efficiently. Doing so will help limit future tax increases.

Passing Prop K will provide just such an opportunity.

Having an audit done by a fresh set of eyes supplied by an experienced firm that has done many efficiency audits would bring a perspective to city expenditures that simply isn’t available with an internal audit. The audit should be seen not as an impediment but as a valuable tool in assisting our city manager in implementing his new approaches by making available comprehensive recommendations on where cost efficiencies can be found.

To the point of some recommendations perhaps being out of line with Austin values, the City Council has the power to interpret those values. The audit does not.
