Cyber attacks are fast moving from information technology (IT) to operational technology (OT) attacks, said CyberSecurity Malaysia.
The OT networks play a critical role in managing and monitoring the processes involved in critical infrastructure, such as in defence, emergency systems and transportation lines.
CyberSecurity Malaysia CEO Datuk Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab said even though such attacks have not happened in Malaysia yet, the government agency is taking preventive rather than responsive measures on the matter.
“We don’t want to wait for it to happen here, that’s why we are taking steps and measures to prevent and protect,” he said on the sidelines of a cyber risk management event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
According to Amirudin, this risk becomes the new trend and is even more dangerous because OT networks include control systems, which means it can be deployed anywhere.
OT systems often perform simple, but essential tasks, such as sensing movement and keeping doors open in a train.
