The Challenge

In September 2023 adventurers Paula Reid & Neil Laughton will cycle across Ukraine for Siobhans Trust.

The route they intend to take is from the Port of Odessa in the South, to Chernobyl, on the North border with Belarus. These two iconic sites bookend the extraordinary journey and involve cycling through the capital, Kiev. A route of approx. 550 miles / 900 km and with elevations amounting to 8000 ft / 2400m. They plan for 10 days with interactions and engagements en route, including serving pizzas on site with Siobhans Trust.

About Paula Reid – see: paulareid.com and adventure-psychology.com

Paula is no stranger to adventure – or Ukraine. She has skied to the South Pole, yacht raced around the world and already cycled across 16 countries in ’50 Good Turns’. Her ‘rules’ for cycling are to touch the border each side of a country and not to cheat by cycling the shortest possible route! She has so far fundraised for UNICEF but this one will be in aid of Siobhans Trust. She has volunteered twice in Ukraine already.

About Neil Laughton – see: neillaughton.com

Neil Laughton is a former army officer, entrepreneur and adventurer. He has completed the Explorers Grand Slam of climbing the highest mountains on all seven continents and reaching both the North and South Poles. He holds a number of records for his activities on land, sea and air including cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats on a Penny Farthing. Neil has also volunteered twice in Ukraine.

About Siobhans Trust – see: siobhanstrust.uk

Siobhans Trust provides food and practical support to the huge number of internally displaced Ukrainians, traumatised by the Russian invasion of their homeland. Since setting up a static feeding station on the Polish/Ukrainian border in early March 2020 – their ‘modus operandi’ has evolved to provide a mobile service with food trucks venturing out across the whole country, from bases in Lviv and Zaporizhzhia. ST can feed up to 4,000 refugees per day.

In support of their challenge, Mark Beaumont, RTW in 79 days cycling record holder says:

‘Cycling across Ukraine is an inspired journey to remind us of the beautiful culture and geography behind the stories of war that we have become so accustomed to.  Raising funds for the ongoing and work of Siobhan’s Trust is vital, a grassroots charity which has been on the ground since the invasion, bringing food and laughter to displaced families.  Knowing Paula and Neil, they will take on this adventure with great passion and positive impact, so I encourage you to support them in any way you can.’
