CAIRO — Grady County Clerk Carrie Croy resigned Tuesday amidst allegations of misappropriation of taxpayer money.

A letter to the county commission from County Administrator Buddy Johnson outlined the findings of an internal audit that revealed “several concerning items.”

The letter alleged that Croy was involved in “widespread” manipulation of the payroll and finance software in order to increase the value of her personal paychecks.

Croy’s alleged actions were “without consistency over time,” the letter said.

The letter alleges that Croy surreptitiously removed various deductions from her own paychecks dating back to 2015, including health- and life-insurance premiums.

County ta payer funds would have to foot the bill for more than $1,000 in illicit revenue for Croy, the letter said.

The letter also alleged Croy removed federal and state tax deductions from many of her paychecks.

The letter was written to recommend disciplinary action. Johnson said the audit revealed additional findings that will be addressed if the investigation becomes criminal in nature.
