Reports indicate three gunmen opened fire on an alleged organized crime member, Atiq Ahmed, and his brother while in police custody; police have apprehended the three shooters. Authorities deployed additional security forces and are reportedly conducting patrols and vehicle searches in several areas across the state.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in all districts of Uttar Pradesh. Under Section 144, public gatherings of four or more people are prohibited.
