Bombing southwest of Kirkuk, Iraq, Dec. 18 kills at least eight security force personnel.

Unidentified assailants detonated an explosive device near an Iraqi security force convoy southwest of Kirkuk city in the village of Safra, Dec 18. The blast killed at least eight federal police officials and left several others injured. There have been no claims of responsibility for the attack; however, it is likely that Islamic State militants, which are active in parts of northern Iraq, were responsible for the attack.
Officials may deploy additional security personnel in the area in response to the attack. Security force operations could include additional checkpoints and patrols. The assailants remain at large and further attacks may occur.
