Should internal auditors learn something from DOGE?

This is NOT a political post. I will keep my thoughts about DOGE and what it is doing to myself. I ask that any comments be similarly focused on internal auditing,

This post is about whether there is something that DOGE is doing that internal audit should consider.

First, some background.

DOGE, the “Department of Government Efficiency” led by Elon Musk, is in the news every day. It’s difficult to be neutral on the topic. Most will have strong opinions. Some believe that it is needed to cut the federal government down to a more appropriate size. Others are of the opinion that it is not only driving hundreds of thousands of dedicated public servants out of work (many of whom are military veterans) and cutting aid to people in need, but it is also creating risk to public services, systems, and data. They raise important questions about the legality of DOGE’s actions and the roles and power of the three branches of federal government.

Wherever you stand, what DOGE is doing raises a question in my mind that has nothing to do with politics, morals, or even Elon Musk.

If the federal government has so much inefficiency (and even the Democrats in Congress admit there is a lot), why weren’t the government’s internal auditors successful in rooting it out? I am talking about the U.S. Government Accountability…
