We’re back, and into the 2020s with #techFT, and one way to measure up how the new decade may unfold is through a visit to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Patrick McGee is at CES this week and predicts the major trends will include advances in autonomous vehicles, a plethora of 8K televisions and a revival for Augmented Reality glasses. 

AR was predicted to be a big growth area in the 2010s, as I discovered in a look back at the predictions being made in December 2009 for that decade. However, apart from the Pokémon Go craze, AR never really took off. Better battery life for glasses and 5G connections may make a difference this time around, say the prognosticators.

Breakout hits from start-ups at CES are few and far between these days, writes Richard Waters in his latest column, and investors are losing faith. Money put into consumer electronics start-ups fell by 30 per cent last year and pioneers disappointed as Fitbit sold itself to Google and Magic Leap continued to keep consumers waiting for an affordable mixed-reality product.
