Derby City Council is set to spend £39,000 to find out where the multi-million pound overspend on its A52 project went wrong.

The cost of the project, which is seeing the A52 near Derby widened to cater for more traffic, was set to be £15 million.

However, the new Tory administration found that this cost had skyrocketed to double the original amount, sparking an internal investigation into how this overspend could have happened, whether it can be reduced and if the project would still be able to be finished on time.

The shock revelation was unveiled by the new leadership on its first day in office.
