At least 11 people were killed in armed attacks in the Ituri Province villages of Chanichani, Meliyota, and Mutuey, June 30. The attacks were reportedly carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist militant organization linked to the Islamic State group.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security posture in the area over the coming days. Similar militant attacks are likely in Ituri Province through July.
Context
The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a state of siege in Ituri and North Kivu. There are regular reports of fatal attacks and kidnappings conducted by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the area. Militants usually use significant and indiscriminate violence, and foreign personnel may become the target of attacks due to the perception that they are wealthy and vulnerable.
