An audit has concluded that the Chesterfield school system failed repeatedly to meet Virginia Retirement System deposit deadlines over a five-month period last year, likely resulting in lost pension benefits for many of its employees.

Greg Akers, director of the county’s Internal Audit Department, briefed members of the audit and finance committee about the audit findings during a recent meeting.

The audit was prompted by an anonymous complaint from a school employee to the county’s Fraud, Waste and Abuse hotline last November. The employee claimed that the school system was not making timely deposits to his or her VRS account.
