A joint advisory by the FBI, Europol European Cybercrime Center, the CISA, and the Netherlands’ National Cyber Security Centre has revealed that the Akira ransomware gang has been able to breach more than 250 private and government organizations, leading to ransom payouts worth $42 million since March 2023.
The group has been active since early 2023 and has rapidly become notorious for targeting organizations across multiple verticals around the globe, including education, finance, and more. The gang usually demands ransoms ranging from $200,000 to a few million. The group is known for creating and deploying a Linux encryptor that exploits VMware ESXi virtual machines, which is in use at many businesses and government bodies.
