It is not very often that a professor will have the work experience of a James Bond-esque nature. Whether it is facing Somalian pirates or dealing with the Italian Mafia, being kidnapped by the Brazilian Primeiro Comando da Capital or confronting the Japanese Yakuza, Bertrand Monnet, an associate professor and Chair of Criminal Risks Management at the EDHEC Business School, France, has done that and more. Set up in 1906, EDHEC was ranked No.1 worldwide for its Masters in Finance by FT last year. In an interview with Joyshree Baruah, the former French army officer talks about his high-risk forensic researches, how he plans a trip to Nigeria for the seventh time for the same project as his previous attempts were called off because it was “too risky”, and how he uses these experiences in the classroom: explaining ways to detect, categorise and mitigate criminal risk in corporate organisations.
