The county’s external auditor, Jon Haderlie of Larson & Company’s, said he takes “full responsibility” for the errors found in the county’s 2022 financial statements and that he is taking steps to ensure that the 2023 statements are free of mistakes.
The mistakes have divided Grand County commissioners, who do not agree on their significance though none have said that they suspect fraud or financial wrongdoing. The controversy began several months ago, after mistakes in the statements were discovered by a citizen.
Haderlie said blame has been misplaced. “It’s unfair that the county’s getting beat up about it,” he said. “…Ultimately the financial statements are their responsibility, but we’re the auditors,” he said.
