Airlines are using risk management specialists and the latest automated data tools to help design the safest and most efficient routes as airspace becomes increasingly complex.

Ongoing conflicts and security concerns affecting the airspace of Ukraine, Russia and parts of the Middle East have forced the rerouting of flights, while other disruptions including the closure of airspace for military exercises and operations, erupting volcanos and even falling space debris mean that flight planning is not always an easy job getting an aircraft from A to B. Coupled with this complexity, airlines are seeking to operate the most direct flight routes possible, taking advantage of weather, in order to save fuel and reduce emissions.

Since early 2022, airlines have been dealing with Ukraine-Belarus-Russian airspace restrictions as a result of the Ukraine conflict, with many avoiding airspace in the region before this, pushing traffic flow to the south and west. More recently, airspace in the Middle East has become an increasingly complex landscape due to the latest Israel-Gaza conflict, as well as the situation in the Red Sea region.
