LabCorp is showing our community the hard way that cybersecurity and supply chain risk management are crucial for all communities and businesses, not just mega-metropolises and the Fortune 100. The class action lawsuits reported by the Burlington Times-News are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to prospective harms that can come from cyber incidents. Whether it is individuals’ data being released, commercial information being made worthless, industrial strategies being revealed to harm employers, or any other consequence from data breaches, our community and those like it must take data security more seriously.
LabCorp may be the first major (publicly discussed) data breach story in our community, but small and medium businesses, law firms, financial agencies, accounting firms, local banks, schools, local governments, nonprofits, and just about any other organization with any degree of cash flow or information are targets that must plan to defend themselves.
