CHARLESTON — The RISE flood recovery program has turned over 25 new mobile home units to families.

That’s according to Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, the adjutant general of the state National Guard and head of the recovery program, who spoke to lawmakers at an interim committee meeting Tuesday morning.

“Looking at where we are now, we’re a little over 90 days into the guard taking responsibility for this and my sense is that the individuals out there impacted by RISE believe that the program is moving in the right direction,” Hoyer told committee members. “I believe they have the confidence that we are working expeditiously to take care of the issues as best we can.”

That leaves 424 homes that still need to be completed. Hoyer said that he hopes a majority of that work can be completed within the next two years.

RISE came under fire from lawmakers earlier this year amid concerns that the program was not helping enough survivors of the June 2016 flood fast enough. The program is handled through an office in the state’s Department of Commerce, and Commerce Secretary left the…
