Are our nation’s oil and natural gas pipelines secure from a cyberattack?

In the last three months, both the House and Senate have held hearings on the cybersecurity practices and the standards that govern our nation’s energy industry. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a report that concluded our electrical grid is increasingly vulnerable to foreign adversaries. And the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) convened a workshop to assess cyber threats to America’s energy systems.

In an unfortunate attempt to justify putting more money into other energy sectors, some pundits impugn the cybersecurity efforts of the oil and natural gas pipelines, saying that pipelines are especially vulnerable.
