WATERTOWN — State police are conducting an investigation initiated by an internal audit of village of Theresa finances.

The Theresa Village Board referred to the matter about two weeks ago, based on the findings from an audit of the village’s budget/finances between June and October of this year, according to a letter from village attorney James A. Burrows.

Jefferson County District Attorney Kristyna S. Mills confirmed the state police are investigating the matter.

“I’m working with state police,” she said, declining to comment further because it’s a “pending investigation.”

The village board conducted the internal investigation as part of “good business practices” when the matter was discovered, Mr. Burrows said Friday.

He, too, declined further comment, saying it could interfere with the investigation.

In an email, Mayor Jonathan Walker said the village’s deputy clerk, Danielle Rajner, resigned on Aug. 14, saying “it is a personnel matter.”

Her resignation was effective immediately following an executive session with village board members, according to board minutes from that night.
