The city does have an internal auditor’s office, but for those looking for an independent audit of the city’s finances, there are a couple of options.
One is to convince city council to vote to pay for an independent audit. The other is to create a petition drive that would put the issue before local voters.
That’s actually happening this year in Texas’ capital city, Austin.
In November, voters there will decide whether to fund an independent audit of all Austin city departments.
