Richmond City Council members want more city oversight over Richmond Public Schools finances after years of scant review.

All eight Council members present for a budget work session Monday voted to add $200,000 to the city’s budget proposal for next year to add two full-time employees within the city auditor’s office to audit the school division’s finances, something RPS says it welcomes.

For the past three years, the division has not had the same level of financial review as other city-funded departments because of a decision by the previous School Board to eliminate the chief auditor position.
