SAN DIEGO — Risk managers should elevate risk awareness and endeavor to become part of the overall decision-making process within their organizations, a leading risk manager said.
Accepting the RIMS Harry & Dorothy Goodell Award for lifetime achievement, Eamonn Cunningham urged risk managers to take a proactive role.
Mr. Cunningham, a longtime chief risk officer and president of RIMS Australasia Chapter, spoke during the opening session of Riskworld, the Risk & Insurance Management Society Inc.’s annual conference in San Diego. The award was announced earlier this year.
Addressing his fellow risk managers, Mr. Cunningham advised them to:
“Surround yourself with people willing to help you – there is no shortage of them in our community; always back yourself and your abilities as you can expect tough challenges to what you’re trying to achieve; hone up on your personal skills and become that passionate, inspiring individual who imparts the risk-aware message within your organization; and, finally, strive to get inside that decision-making room and never ever stop learning.”
