Risk management part of spring planning for farmers | Environment

BLOOMINGTON — As planting nears, farmers and experts are looking at details to make the 2018 cropping season profitable, despite the challenges of low prices.

Most of the tactics are focused on managing risks, which could be through crop protection, crop insurance or marketing decisions. Speakers discussed the options at the Resilient Farmer Roadshow, hosted by the Illinois Soybean Association and the University of Illinois in Bloomington on Feb. 15.

The low price of corn compared to soybeans has led Dan Farney, who farms with his dad near Morton, to change his crop rotation. At one point he consistently grew two-thirds corn and one-third soybeans, but now plans a 50-50 corn-soybean…
