What is upskilling?

Upskilling is simply the process of teaching people new skills that will help them in the workplace. After all, continuous learning at work means that those employees will a growth mindset are developing the right skills to help them stay relevant and competitive, and future proof their career.

Upskilling can be done through formal training or courses, or even through ad-hoc platforms such as YouTube videos or LinkedIn Learning sessions. It relates to both hard skills for specific roles (such as coding, design skills or data management) and soft skills, which tend to be more applicable across numerous roles and are more likely to be self-developed (like timekeeping and interpersonal skills). 

However, the outcome of upskilling should be to ensure employees are better prepared to do their existing jobs in a changing technology landscape, or to fill the new positions created by technological progress.
